Last Thursday a third state championship banner was unveiled in the entranceway of the gym at Sweetwater Park. The next most recent one is a football state championship from 2013.
The Thomson 14 & under boys team captured the 2020 Class B state championship. All but one of the players attended Thursday evening for the unveiling.
Trevor Welcher Sr., recreation director, Thomson-McDuffie County Recreation Department, congratulated the players.
“I want to thank you fellas for representing us well in the state playoffs, first off not just winning but showing class when you won,” Welcher said.
He thanked the coaches for their working with the young players and also gave credit to the parents for supporting the team and its players.
“Congratulations fellas. The future is bright for all of you,” he said. “That banner stays up there for life.”
Sammie Wilson, who coached the team praised the players first for the middle school championship they won and then moving on to win a state championship for the recreation department.
Wilson, after the presentation, said the team won the championship at home at Sweetwater Park by defeating Washington County. They had beat Liberty County to advance into the title game.
“That group there is an awesome group,” he said of the team. “That’s a great group of guys.”
He again mentioned that nine of the 10 players had already won a middle school championship. Some of the players then went on to win a national championship with another team.
Damekas D’Antignac and Wykey Lane helped Wilson coach the recreation department championship team.
