Her mother and former Briarwood Academy cross country coach, Mary Lester, shared the story of how the college-bound senior started running.
“Six years ago Jamie attended the Mighty Bucs Track and Field Camp hosted by Matthew Graxiano and Taylor Coxwell. For Jamie, that camp was the start of her love of competitive running,” said Mary Lester. “She decided that running would be her sport of choice and she dedicated her time to training year round.”
Lester explained her daughter will now be joining both the cross country and track teams at Oglethorpe Uiversity next year. She will compete in 6k races for the cross country team and distance events for both indoor and outdoor track.
“Jamie has achieved success as a multi-year and multi-sport all-region and all-state athlete here at Briarwood. This is the result of consistent and progressive training. She started out like many of you, learning to run that first mile and now she consistently runs four to six miles at a time,” Mary Lester told the Briarwood students gathered in the media center for the signing March 5. “You guys can train yourselves to do that too, just remember to set goals and follow through.”
Mike Lester, Jamie’s father and her current Briarwood cross country coach, explained that the scholarship is all merit based for academics and civic involvement.
“Because of her academics. because of doing well on placement exams, because of doing well on civic involvement; she is able to continue her athletic career,” he said.
Jamie Lester will join her brother, Bill Lester, a former Briarwood graduate. who already runs for Oglethorpe University.
During the signing she was joined by parents Mike and Mary Lester, siblings Abby and Bill Lester, and Briarwood coaches Mary Lynn Reese and Hannah DeMore.
