Thomson-McDuffie Recreation Department named Devin Lampkin as their new athletic coordinator recently.
According to Lampkin, he is originally from Evans, and graduated from Evans High School in 2015. After graduating from Evans, he attended Georgia Southern University and got a degree in recreation management.
Lampkin said he has been working in the recreation field for most of his life.
“I’ve been working in recreation since I was 15,” Lampkin said. “I found a passion for it, then I worked for the YMCA throughout college for about five years.”
Lampkin said he’s a big sports fan and his favorite sport is football. According to Lampkin, he played football in high school, but wasn’t able to in college. Lampkin said he was working in Statesboro with someone that knew Trevor Welcher, director at Thomson-McDuffie County Recreation, and they told him to apply for the job.
According to Lampkin, he looks over athletics like football, baseball, basketball, and soccer. Lampkin said that he has ideas that he wants to implement at TMRD.
“Through the YMCA I did like a home school P.E. thing,” Lampkin said. “I would like to somehow bring that here.”
Lampkin said this idea is to allow kids that may not have a whole lot of social interaction to be able to interact with other kids a few times a week. According to Lampkin, he wants to create a competitive recreation department.
“I want us to be able to compete with other people in the district,” Lampkin said. “Make it fun, it’s fun winning.”
Lampkin said that if they set up a good program at TMRD, it could benefit the high schools.
“I know Thomson is a big football place,” Lampkin said. “I will hopefully get a chance to work with some of the coaches.”
According to Lampkin, he enjoys playing golf and fishing when he gets the chance.
“I’m a family person, God first, passionate, and I’m open,” Lampkin said when asked to describe himself.
