The Thomson Lady Dogs hit the base paths running Monday with a season-opening win at Lady Dog Field.

In a non-region game, Thomson won 6-4 over the neighboring Lady Tigers of Washington-Wilkes.

Lady Bulldog head coach Danny Ferrell said his team trembled a bit early, but toughened.

“As a team, we have to settle down and play, and we did,” he said. “First game jitters are now out of the way so things should start coming together.”

On an upside, the coach said the team was able to come away with an opening day win despite having several errors and mistakes.

“I look for us to be minimizing these mistakes and us moving forward to continue to succeed across the diamond,“ Ferrell said.

Freshman Kaitlyn Grissom was able to control the zone from the pitcher’s mound and kept batters honest.

“She and senior catcher Madeline Brown do a good job working together,” the coach noted. “Grissom also contributed with two base hits in the game which led to us scoring runs in each of those innings.”

Senior Madeline Brown popped a two-run homer to left that gave the Lady Dogs a momentum spike in the third inning and tie the game at 3-3.

“I felt like we ran the bases well and aggressively,” Ferrell said, adding that he has told the team that this group of girls is the most knowledgeable softball group he has been around since being in Thomson.

“We have the dynamics to accomplish our goals, but we just have to put it all together,” Ferrell stated. “We have a great group of seniors, they know what they wish to accomplish and have set high expectations, and I look forward to us having a great year.”

The Lady Dogs host Elbert County at 5:30 p.m., Aug. 8, before a 5:30 p.m. game Aug. 12 against Lakeside at THS. The next day, Oglethorpe visits the Lady Dogs at 5:30 p.m.
