A softball tournament is being held at Sweetwater Park on Friday, July 9, starting at 7 p.m.
According to Bonnie Widener, this tournament was set up to honor her son, Drake Widener, whose 25th birthday would be July 9. Drake Widener played baseball for Thomson High School. According to Widener, this tournament was started in 2016 by some of his friends.
Widener said all of the proceeds go to a number of different things. They also go to different seniors. Some of the things that the money would be donated to are local mission trips, medical costs, Partners for Success, and Manna, according to Widener. There wasn’t a tournament last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Widener, the tournament consists of 12 teams, and the tournament is played on one day.
“We’ve had to turn teams away,” Widener said. “I guess everyone wanted to play.”
Widener said her goal is to make it so everyone can come out and enjoy the tournament.
“We try to make it family oriented and have everyone come out,” Widener said.
Widener wanted to thank everyone for all of the support.
“We wouldn’t be able to do it without the support from our family, friends, and the community,” Widener said.
