Dear Editor:

Did you know September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month? According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 47,173 Americans died by suicide and 1.4 million people attempted suicide in 2017 alone. Each day, in America, there is an average of 129 suicides. While these statistics are alarming, incidences of suicide continue to increase in America and even our local community, especially growing in our teenage population. At The Orion Foundat;on, we acknowledge the pressing need for suicide prevention education and awareness.

The ORION Foundat;on is hosting Tackle the Stigma (a suicide prevention awareness event). During this event, we will share resources and artistically express lived experiences in an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic.

Tackle the Stigma is an one-hour program (music, shared experience, and presentations) followed by a 30-minute informational social that includes refreshments and raffles/giveaways that will be held  Saturday, Sept. 28, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Thomson-McDuffie Senior Center at 304 Greenway St,  in Thomson. The event is free and open to public of all ages

We can all benefit from learning more about suicide prevention. Please consider joining us.
