Betty Carr

Thomson, GA – Mrs. Betty Joyce Carr, 82, of Beulah Lane, Thomson, GA entered into rest on September 2, 2019.

Mrs. Carr was born in Shawmut, Alabama, the daughter of the late A.L. Golden and the late Annie May Golden.  She was a secretary/bookkeeper and retired from Swift Mill in Columbus, GA.  Mrs. Carr was a member of Marshall Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Lynn Carr of Oxford, England and Lisa Bolton (Madison) of Thomson, GA; brother, Billy Joe Golden (Beth) of Pell City, Al; sister, Mavis Hill of Waverly Hall, GA; grandchildren, Matt Bolton (Julie), Glen Bolton, Ginny Davis (Greg), Rebekah Stephens (Harli), Jonathan Rosenburg, Joel Rosenburg, and Joy Rosenburg; great-grandchildren, Jax Davis, Erin Bolton, Gabby Brumfield (Josh), Micaiah Bolton, Kade Bolton, Blake Davis, Hunter Bolton, Natalie Bolton, Aiden Bolton, Chase Bolton, and Delaney Bolton; and great great-grandchild, Caleb Brumfield.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Resthaven Cemetery, 6415 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Lanett, AL with Rev. Mark Sellers and Rev. Doug Thompson officiating.

James Willie Hamilton

Thomson, GA - Mr. James Willie Hamilton entered into rest on August 28, 2019.

Our beloved James Willie “Hammer” Hamilton leaves to cherish his precious memories: four daughters, Marsha (Mallory) Norman, Maria Hamilton, Andrea (Willie) Cummings, all of Thomson, GA and Gail (Sam) Johnson of Dearing, GA; six grandchildren, Malita, Jamian, Mason, Mercedes, Aquila and Bryce; eight great-grandchildren; six sisters, Dorothy (Eddie) Kendrick, Johnnie (Logan) Marshall, Joyce Hamilton, all of Thomson, GA, Virginia Anderson and Mildred (Grover) Watson, both of Cincinnati, OH, Rossie Jackson of Warner Robins, GA; two brothers, Rev. Bobby (Verlander) Hamilton and James Keith Scott, all of Thomson, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held September 2, 2019 at Springfield Baptist Church, Thomson, Georgia with Rev. F.D. Favors, Pastor / Elder Jimmy Sturgis, Eulogist / Min. Roderick Howard, Presider.

Linda Neal Holt

Thomson, GA – Mrs. Linda Neal Holt, 68, McLeroy Drive, Thomson, GA entered into rest on September 1, 2019.

Linda was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County, Georgia and worked at Michael’s Restaurant for 34 years. She also worked at Chic-Fil -A for a while. Linda was a member of Union Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing and traveling to the mountains. She especially loved her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Ted Holt; mother, Jeanette Land; daughter, Teresa Griswell; brother, Paul McLeroy (Catherine); sisters, Shirley Saxon (Danny), Brenda Cramer; granddaughter, Kayla Maddox (Josh); great grandchildren, Dawson Haney, Oaklynn Maddox, Riverlynn Maddox; brother in law, Robert Holt; cousin, Rudean Robiston and nine nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2019 in the chapel of Beggs Funeral Home with Rev. Butch Baston and Rev. Scott Franklin officiating. The family received friends from 9:30 until 11 a.m. prior to the service.

Dr. Louise L. McCommons

Thomson,  GA. – Dr. Sara Louise Lunsford McCommons entered into rest on August 28, 2019, at her residence at the age of 99.  Mrs. McCommons, born on October 11, 1919, was the daughter of Ione Thornton Lunsford and Joseph Leonard Lunsford.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William Benjamin McCommons.  She was, also, preceded in death by her parents, by a sister, Elizabeth Lunsford Granade, and by two brothers, William Lunsford and Allen Hall; and daughter-in-law, Pat Callaway McCommons.

Dr. McCommons is survived by two sons:  William Benjamin McCommons, Jr. and Joseph Claude McCommons (Frances).  She is survived, also, by five grandchildren:  Catherine M. Stott (Glen), W. Benjamin McCommons III (Deborah), Joseph C. McCommons, Jr., Brooks E. McCommons (Chris), and Ashlie M. Williams (Chuck).  Surviving, also, are ten great-grandchildren: Sarah Stott, Harrison Stott, Anna Stott, Laura-Kate Williams, Blaine Williams, Neely McCommons, Bennett McCommons, Banks McCommons, Mackenzie McCommons, and Delanie McCommons.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 31st at the First Baptist Church, Thomson, Georgia, with the Rev. David Lambert and Dr. Leonard Dupree officiating.  Pallbearers were Joe McCommons, Jr., Ben McCommons III, Brooks McCommons, Glen Stott, Chuck Williams, Harrison Stott, Blaine Williams, Bennett McCommons, and Banks McCommons.

The family received friends in the atrium of the church two hours prior to the service.  Friends may also call at the residence of Joe and Frances McCommons, 207 Milledge Street, Thomson, Georgia.

Prior to her membership at First Baptist Church, Thomson, Dr. McCommons was, at an early age, baptized and became a member of Sardis Baptist Church located at Rayle, Georgia, where she was born and lived as a child with her parents.  She became a member of Thomson First Baptist Church in 1940 after marriage to Ben McCommons.

For her entire life, Dr. McCommons was active in church activities.  She especially enjoyed teaching children, youth and adult Sunday School classes. She loved the Lord, her church, and her church family.

Beginning in 1969, Dr. McCommons and her family found a second home in Highlands, North Carolina.  There she became an associate member of the First Baptist Church where she enjoyed the worship and fellowship for many years.

Dr. McCommons graduated from Washington High School in 1936.  She then attended Anderson Junior College (now Anderson University) and graduated in 1938, with an Associate of Arts Degree.  She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Georgia State College for Women in 1956, and her Master of Education Degree from G.S.C.W. in 1961.  From the University of Georgia, she received a Specialist in Education Degree (1963) and a Doctor of Education Degree (1969).

Dr. McCommons taught at Thomson Elementary School (1938-1940), then at Thomson Middle School and later at Thomson Junior High during the years 1953-1971.  From 1971-1978, she was employed at Augusta College in the Department of Education, first as a teacher, then as director of the department.

From 1978-1984, Dr. McCommons was, first, a Science Consultant, and later, Director of the CSRA Cooperative Educational Service Agency serving a 12-county area.  She retired in 1984.

Dr. McCommons was a member and officer of several honor societies during her thirty-three years in education.  She treasured her years as a member of the Alpha Theta Chapter, Psi Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society from 1958 until her death.  At Anderson College she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa fraternity.  While a student at the University of Georgia, she became a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and of the Kappa Delta Phi Honor Society.  She was, later, a member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association (Emeritus membership).

Dr. McCommons was also a member and officer of other organizations including two patriotic societies:  the Captain John Wilson Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), membership beginning in 1945, and the Fort James Chapter, National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century beginning in 1984 until her death.

Gerald W. McGahee, Sr.

Dearing, GA – Mr. Gerald Watson McGahee, 74, entered into rest August 27, 2019.

Mr. McGahee, a lifelong resident of McDuffie County, was born in Augusta, Georgia, the son of the late Thomas Watson McGahee and the late Mary McCorkle McGahee.  He worked as a mechanic for 43 years for Darrell Johnson Chevrolet, Johnson Chevrolet, and later Stokes-Hodges, Inc.  Mr. McGahee enjoyed working on vehicles of all kinds, NASCAR, tractors, farming, TV Reality shows, and he loved his family.  He was a Christian by faith.  In addition to his parents, Mr. McGahee was predeceased by his brothers, Ray McGahee and Burke McGahee; and his sisters, Sarah Sealy and Mae Mobley.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Patricia McGahee; son, Gerald W. McGahee, Jr.; daughters, Angie McGahee (Joey), Shanda Hall (Donovia), and Mandy McGahee; brothers, David McGahee (June), Mack McGahee (Brenda); sisters, Jane Usry and Becky Fulcher (Tommy); grandchildren, T.J. Smith (Kelly), Dennali Grissom, Tristan McGahee, D.J. Hall, and Damari Hall; and great-grandchild, William Smith.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 30, 2019 in the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Don Widener officiating. Interment followed in the Dearing City Cemetery.

The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the funeral home.

Gibson, GA - Mr. Wayne Norris, age 70, passed away on August 31, 2019.

Graveside services were held September 2, 2019 in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Wayne is survived by son & daughter in-law, Brett & Crystal Norris of Gibson, daughters & son in-laws, Alecia & Mike Esarey, Fort Walton Beach, FL., Brooke & Paul Alaniz of Lynana, SC., brothers & sisters in-law, GT & Hazel Norris of Winnsboro, SC., James & Catherine Norris of Sandersville, 5 grandchildren, Lil Brett Norris, Sallie Anne Norris, Bekka & Alex Walicke, Ian Smith, & Emma Smith, sons he thought of as his own, Tommy Johnson, Dennis Bazemore & Bubbie Simmions, several nieces & nephews, care givers, Wanda Smith, Christian Powell, Barbara Bazemore & Julia Stevenson.

Thomson, GA - Mr. Sam Roberts departed his life on August 27, 2019 at his residence.

He leaves to cherish his memory: two sisters, Lucille (Ervin) Kendrick and Nancy McNair, all of Thomson, Georgia; one brother, George Roberts of Thomson, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Ernestine Thely of Thomson, Georgia; an additional brother-in-law, Alfonso Huff of Wrens, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were held August 31, 2019 at New Zion Hill A.M.E. Church with Rev. Donna Marie Calix, Pastor, Presider / Rev. Jimmy Roberts, Eulogist.

Terry Joseph Usry

Gibson, GA - Mr. Terry Joseph Usry, age 70, died August 28, 2019.
