Mr. Charles Lee (Charlie) Andrews, 62, entered into rest August 29, 2021. He leaves to cherish his memory: eleven siblings, Bernestine A. Hill, Yvonne A. Bush, Merlendia A. Tanksley, all of Augusta, GA, Pastor Quinn A. (Pastor Melvin) Bell of Stone Mountain, GA, Rose A. Laing of Ellenwood, GA, Robert S. (Robin) Andrews of Warrenton, GA, Connie A. (Elder Gregory) Butler, Elder Sherry A. Jackson, all of Augusta, GA, Kathy (J.C.) Mills-Brantley,of Akron, OH, Scottie L. (Janelle) Paschal and Rachel A. Smith, both of Augusta, GA; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and additional sorrowing friends. Mary Jane Betancourt
Mrs. Mary Jane Betancourt, 75, Dearing, Georgia, entered into rest on August 24, 2021. Mrs. Betancourt was born in San Antonio, Texas, on July 9, 1946, grew up in Altus, Oklahoma and lived there until she moved to Dearing, Georgia in 1986. She was the daughter of the Pomas Sanchez and Margarita L. Sanchez. Betty has been an employee of Walmart in Thomson for over 15 years. She was a member of New Hope Church on Belair Road, loved serving her Lord and Savior and especially loved her family and friends. Mrs. Betancourt was preceded in death by her parents, Pomas and Margarita Sanchez and a sister. Her survivors include her husband, Fred Betancourt; daughters, Elva Hutchinson and Margaret Kaage (Thomas); her grandchildren, Denise Renee Watkins, Robert Michael Brekke, Tamara Lynn Brekke, Tiffani Marie Kaage, Brenton Thomas Kaage and Elysse Jane Watkins; three great grandchildren; five brothers and two sisters. Ann Ethridge Brown
Louisville- Mrs. Ann Ethridge Brown, 79, entered into rest August 29, 2021. Survivors include her son, David Peyton Brown, Louisville; daughter, Claudia Lee Brown Johnson (John), Warrenton; brother, Frank Ethridge, Louisville; sister, Rose Ann Dupree, Columbus; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Benjamin Buffington, 94, of Warrenton, Georgia, entered into rest on August 16, 2021. Mr. Buffington was born in Warrenton, Georgia on March 19, 1927, grew up there and lived there all his life. He was the son of the late Benjamin Eugene Buffington and Myrtle Whitfield Buffington. Mr. Buffington served our Country in the Army during World War II and worked in maintenance as a loom fixer for Milliken & Company, Kingsley Plant, Thomson, Georgia until he retired. He loved people, never meet a stranger and especially loved his family and friends. Mr. Buffington was preceded in life by his parents, Benjamin Eugene Buffington and Myrtle Whitfield Buffington; his brother, Grady Buffington; his sisters, Louise Buffington Keim, Icey Buffington Johns and Deleen Buffington Stevens. He is survived by his Wife, Naomi Usry Buffington of Warrenton, Georgia; his daughters, Donna Sullivan of Warrenton, Georgia and Darlene Banks (James) of Warrenton, Georgia; and his grandchildren, Paige Sullivan of Warrenton, Georgia, Patrick Banks (Elizabeth) of Mitchell, Georgia and Sherry Howard (Jeremy) of Waynesboro, Georgia; and great grandchildren, Jordan Howard and Brooke Howard. A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 10, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service. Merrill Webster Callaway, Jr.
Mr. Merrill Webster Callaway, Jr., 79, of Warrenton, Georgia, entered into rest on August 30, 2021. Mr. Callaway was born in Washington, Georgia on April 12, 1942. He was the son of the late Merrill Webster Callaway, Sr. and Louise Brown Callaway. He grew up in Washington, Georgia and graduated from Washington-Wilkes High School in 1960 and was a graduate of John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Tennessee. After graduation, he worked in the mortuary business with his father in Warrenton, Georgia. From 1968 – 1992, Mr. Callaway owned and operated M. W. Callaway & Sons Funeral Home in Wrens, Georgia. After retiring, he started Callaway Auto Recovery Service and did that for a number of years. Merrill was a member of the Wrens Lions Club and was a Volunteer Wrens Firefighter. He was a member of Warrenton First Baptist Church, Warrenton, Georgia. Mr. Callaway enjoyed listening to gospel music and attending gospel singings, had a compassion for the needs of others was a quiet faithful servant of the Lord. He had a passion for antique automobiles, loved animals, loved tending his farm in Warrenton, Georgia and his home in the North Georgia Mountains, and especially loved his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merrill Webster Callaway, Sr. and Louise Brown Callaway and his son, Merrill Jeffery Callaway. Mr. Callaway is survived by his sons, Michael Callaway (Melissa) of Warrenton, Georgia, Mark Callaway (Michelle) of Warrenton, Georgia and Chris Callaway (Rosella) of Stapleton, Georgia; his brother Doug Callaway (Gayle) of Warrenton, Georgia, and his grandchildren, Chanler Callaway, Wyatt Callaway and Connor Callaway; his nieces, Christy Hinton (Jay) and Ashli Callaway and several great nieces and one great-great niece. The family would like to gratefully thank Judy Kent for her unwavering faithful support and care of Mr. Callaway during the past years. Jimmie Ruth Gurley
Columbus, GA – Mrs. Jimmie Ruth Gurley, 90, died Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Spring Harbor Memory, Columbus, GA. Mrs. Gurley was born September 19, 1930, daughter of Kate Oma Day and Lewie Emerson Alford. Jimmie Ruth was an elementary school teach for over 26 years, having received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees and performed all of that service in the State of Georgia. She was a lifelong member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Jimmie, her husband Jim (deceased) were married in 1948 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage before Jim’s passing in 2008. They and their two sons spent many years in Thomson, Fitzgerald, and Columbus before retiring. Jimmie Ruth was Presbyterian by faith. Survivors include her two sons, James Ross Gurley and Frank Omar Gurley (Cynthia); one sister, Ellen Ross Jennings; three brothers, Fred Alford (Deena), Tom Alford (Phyllis) and Larry Nichols; two granddaughters, Alicia Ortiz McGlamory (Gary), Lindsey Gurley Power (Brett); and four great grandchildren, Alex Drew Owens, Weldon Lee McGlamory, Harper Ann Power, and Hadley Elizabeth Power. Nieces and Nephews are; Tami Alford Sani, Tonya Alford, Ed Alford, Kelly Alford, Leslie Jennings, Roslyn Jennings, Patti Alford, and Jan Alford. Deceased brother; George Robert Alford (Jo). Graveside services were held Saturday, September 4, 2021 at Restlawn Memory Gardens in LaGrange, GA for family members and burial followed.
