Patrice Ogletree Ashley

Thomson, GA – Mrs. Patrice Ogletree Ashley, 67, entered into rest July 22, 2019.

Patti was born in Greensboro, Georgia, the daughter of the late Joseph Eli Ogletree and the late Lessie Jeanette Patrick Ogletree.  She worked for the Department of Family and Children Services for over 30 years.  Patti was a faithful and devoted member of Bethel Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher for the Primary Class.  She enjoyed shopping and spending time with her grandchildren.  Patti also enjoyed playing cards with a group of ladies from the church known as the “Golden Girls.”  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Lawrence H. Ashley.

Survivors include her son, Preston Ashley; daughter, Leigh Lackey (Travis) of Harlem, GA; sisters, Josie Mines (James) of Madison, GA and Judy Braxton of Washington, GA; and grandchildren, Topanga Hughes and Justin Hughes (Morgan).

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 26, at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Ferrell officiating.  Interment will follow in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 25, 2019 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lois Blanchard

Thomson, GA - Mrs. Lois Blanchard, 96, widow of Mr. John E. Blanchard, Sr., entered into rest peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2019, at Lake Crossing Health Care Center, Appling, Georgia.  

Funeral services were held July 24, 2019 in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Lambert officiating.  Interment will follow in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Blanchard was a native of Meriden, Conn., but lived in Thomson since 1951. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Thomson. Lois loved to cook for her family, gardening, working in her yard, sewing and reading.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  We were truly blessed to have had her.  

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, John E. Blanchard Sr.  She is survived by her five children, Robert P. Blanchard, Thomson, Georgia, William H. Blanchard, Sr. (Charlene), Grovetown, Georgia, John E. Blanchard, Jr. (Barbara), Charleston, South Carolina, Ruth E. Blanchard, Grovetown, Georgia, Thomas W. Blanchard, Thomson, Georgia; four grandchildren, Recy B. Reese (Keith), William H. Blanchard II (Melissa), Dominique Blanchard and John Blanchard; five great-grandchildren, Ivie & Lillian Reese, Espy, William, and Owen Blanchard.

Thomson, GA - Hornsby Lee Brown, departed his earthly body and entered into glory on Sunday, July 14, 2019.

He is survived by his wife Pauline Hawkins Brown of Thomson, Georgia; brother Marion (Molly) Brown of Portsmouth, VA; “baby sister” Illene (Darwin) Kinsey of Atlanta, GA; daughter Wylene (Douglas) Mills, sons Tony (Michelle) Brown and Hornsby (Gloria) Brown, Jr. (Gloria) and daughter Tracie (Patrick) Turman; grandchildren Kischondrius (“Kiki”) Tanksley, Wyneshia Shank, Derquerius Brown, Devon (Bianca) Walls, Courtney Wright, Camiel Lawrence, Devin Rogers, Douglas Mills, Jr., Jamari Mills, Patrell Turman, Tevin (Candyn) Turman, Briana Turman, Adriauanna (“Meme”) Sturgis, and Gabriel Brown; great-grandchildren, Mason Ballard, Zayden Turman, Eliana Turman and Devinity Rogers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Thomson, GA - Ms. Camilla Carlton Collins, age 53, entered into eternal rest July 15, 2019.

Thomson, GA - Mr. Marvin Hubert Land, 53, entered into rest Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at Augusta University Medical Center.  He was the son of the Late Mr. William Albert Land and Mrs. Mary Frances Phillips Land.

A celebration of life was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 21, 2019, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Charles Land and Johnny Rogers officiating.

n in Augusta, Georgia, but had lived in Thomson for many years. He was passionate about his career as a carpenter; making sure every job he did was perfect.  Marvin loved being outdoors, doing yard work, and sitting around a fire with friends and family.  He also loved spending time with his grandson.

Mr. Land is survived by his wife, Denise Harmon of Thomson; Son, Michael Land (Lynn Gingery) of Thomson; brothers, William Land, and Clarence Richards, both of Dearing, Bobby Land of Thomson, and Lawrence Phillips of Gibson; sister, Judy Norman of Indiana; grandson, Michael Scott Land; Uncle, Charles Land (Madge) of Thomson and good friend, Larry Burns, Thomson.

Warrenton, GA - Mr. Virgil Norris Lewis, Jr. departed this life July 15, 2019.

Ashley Bales Reed

Dearing, GA – Mrs. Ashley Bales Reed, 35, entered into rest July 15, 2019 along with her child, Summer Grace Matherly in Wilkinson County after an automobile accident.

Ashley was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County, GA. She was a court specialist with the Division of Community Services. Ashley loved her family, especially her grandchild, enjoyed cooking, boating at the lake, and motorcycle riding.  She was preceded in death by her, grandfather, Edward Bales and a cousin, Michael Dingus.

Survivors include her beloved husband, Mike Reed; son, Tylor Matherly; daughter, Chloe Paige Matherly; mother, Julie Bales; father, Danny Bohler; maternal grandmother, Daphne Bales; brother, Rob Gay; stepchildren, Austin Reed (Abigail), Levi Reed (Ashleigh Cushman) and Somer Ryleigh Reed; sisters, Jessica Lynn Kitchens (Josh), Brittany Desantis (Anthony); stepbrothers, Jeff Bohler, Dan Bohler (Andrea), Timmy Bohler (Stephanie), grandson, Wyatt Reed and in-laws, Steve Reed (Gloria) and Cathy Kitchens (Ray Rickerson).

Thomson, GA - Mr. Willie James "Bill" Roberts, age 79 entered into rest on July 11, 2019. The Celebration of Life was held July 20th, 2019, at the New Zion Hill AME Church.

Bill leaves to cherish his memories; two daughters, Veronica Roberts and Shaquita Roberts both of Thomson, Georgia; two step-daughters, Barbara Ward of Washington, D.C. and Lisa Few of Thomson, Georgia; five grandchildren, Sherise Jenkin, Malik Bell, Ra’ Niyah Roberts, Sa’Riyah Roberts and Tahari Wright all of Thomson, Georgia & seven step-grandchildren; one sister, Margie Roberts of Thomson, Georgia; four brothers, Henry Roberts, Bobby (Sandra) Roberts, Gub Roberts, Jr., all of Thomson, Georgia and David Roberts of Hephzibah, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Dearing, GA – Mr. Jack Kyle Smith, 33, entered into rest July 21, 2019.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Michelle “Niki” Smith; son, Alexander Smith; mother, Linda Smith; and sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Smith, all of Dearing, GA.

Margaret H. Stevens

Thomson - Mrs. Margaret H. Stevens, 97, widow of Judge Robert L. Stevens, Sr., died Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at her residence.

Funeral services were Thursday, July 18, 2019, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sandra Lightner and Dr. James Lemley officiating.

Mrs. Stevens was born at Hobbs Mill and was a lifelong resident of McDuffie County. She was a member of Thomson First United Methodist Church, but had been attending the Warrenton First United Methodist Church for some time. She was a Homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Robert L. Stevens, Sr.; her parents, William “Booch” and Nell Hobbs; her son, Robert L. Stevens, Jr.; her grandson, Lee Stevens; and her brother, William “Billy” Hobbs, Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Jane (Charles) Chalker, Thomson;  three grandchildren, Traci  Chalker, Steve (Lori) Chalker, and Traylee (Wesley) Dean; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah Chalker, Andrew Chalker, Emma Charles Dean, and Teal Dean.

The family would like to thank her caregivers; Chatty Hill, Traci Chalker, and the team of Regency Hospice.

Thomson, GA – Mr. Steve V. Strouble, 62,  passed away on Monday, July 22, 2019 at the University Hospital-McDuffie in Thomson.

A service is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 11:00 AM, in the Thomson High School Auditorium, 1160 White Oak Road, Thomson.
