A group of local children took time on Saturday to try to make Thomson a cleaner place.
The group, called Stop the Violence, began as an idea from Jaden West and Da'ryan Howard. The young men wanted to clean up the area surrounding Pitts Street Park and Pitts Street neighborhood because, as they said, much of the violence in Thomson occurs in this area.
"There have been a lot of killings and violence over here lately," West said. "We have had the mindset for a while now but have been scared to do it. We wanted to do it now to stop the violence."
A group of children, some adults and members of the Thomson Police Department set out from Pitts Street Park on Aug. 29 armed with trash bags, gloves and masks to pick up various pieces of trash around the neighborhood. They cleaned much of Pitts Street, Bussey Ave, Gus Street and Dell Dr.
This clean up will hopefully not be the last, according to West and Howard. They said they would like to try to do something similar on a monthly basis.
