A police investigation into a child hiding in a local store led to cruelty charges being filed against the mother.
According to Thomson Police Lt. Don Hilson, Eleanor Thomas of the 100 block of Willow Street was arrested Aug. 29 for family violence after police sought to determine why a child was found hiding in Walmart.
Hilson said a police sergeant spoke to the child and to store staff and then located Thomas.
“Further investigation into the incident revealed the child had been hit,” he said.
Thomas was charged with cruelty to children in the first degree-maliciously causing excessive pain and was transported to the McDuffie County Jail. She spent two days in confinement and was released after posting a $5,000 bond.
