The McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death at the Love’s Travel Stop on Washington Road. At 4:30p.m., a dispatch went out concerning an unconscious person near the pumps. The McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, McDuffie County Fire and EMS, and McDuffie and Columbia Counties’ coroners came to the scene. Upon investigating, officers discovered that Ernest Ray, 34, a D&G Outdoor Lighting & Signs worker of Villa Rica, Georgia, had died while working on the Loves sign near the pumps. The body was sent to a crime lab in Decatur to determine the cause.
McDuffie County Coroner Foster Wylie said he was able to contact the victim’s mother who lives in Florida, around midnight on Friday. As of yet, he said a cause of death has not been determined by the crime lab. Wylie added that results could take between three to six months.
