A Thomson Police Department cadet has resigned following an internal investigation concerning a social media post.
Last week the department was contacted by outside sources claiming the Thomson officer had posted negative racial comments on social media. The sources also contacted The McDuffie Progress and shared a screen shot of the comments, which appeared to have been made by Bobby Floyd. The comments were originally posted in connection to a crime story posted inside a closed group on social media.
“After the investigation it was determined, the officer said truthfully it was his statement and was allowed to resign in lieu of termination,” said Thomson Police Chief Anson Evans.
Floyd was employed by the department earlier this year as a cadet. Previously he was a sworn officer in another state. He was not yet a sworn officer in Georgia but would have been upon completion of the police academy. He was one of a batch of five cadets sent to the police academy by TPD when training resumed following a COVID-19 break in the academy’s schedule.
Evans said he “does not tolerate any kind of racial overtones within the department and anyone that is found in violation of his policies will be removed from the department.”
