A 26-year-old University of Georgia student was killed Wednesday when the Ford Explorer she was driving crashed into the rear of a sanitation truck that was stopped southbound on State Route 17 north of Thomson. She was the only occupant in the vehicle.

Paul Johnson, McDuffie County deputy coroner, said Amy Joy Janvier, of Loganville, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:48 p.m. Her body will be sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy, according to Johnson.

According to Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Matt MacDonald, the truck had stopped in the right lane to pick up a trash can from a residence when the collision happened around noon Wednesday.

There are two southbound traffic lanes at that point, near Huntington Road, but the driver of the Explorer continued traveling in the right lane rather than changing lanes into the left lane, which was clear, according to MacDonald.

“We’re still looking into the causation. It’s early on,” said MacDonald, who is part of the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT).
