Cars are shown outside Thomson High School on Tuesday, the same day closure of all McDuffie Schools was announced.

The McDuffie County School system announced Tuesday afternoon that all schools would close for face-to-face instruction until Nov. 29. District schools will re-open on Monday, November 30. All face-to-face learners will transition to at-home learning during the short-term closure.

The temporary closure was due to “increases in positive cases of COVID-19 among students and staff, a number of students and staff in quarantine, a significant absentee rate among face-to-face students, and a high number of pupils sent home ill,” school system administrators stated in a Nov. 17 news release.

“The district will continue to monitor public health as well as student and staff attendance data with a plan for face-to-face students to return to campus on November 30,” states the system’s official release.  “Should the closure need to be extended, families will be notified as soon as possible. The district sincerely appreciates the understanding of its families as we strive to keep students, staff, and our community safe.”

Face-to-face students received directions to continue their learning during this time of temporary school closure, according to the news release. Questions about assignments should be directed to children’s teachers via email.

Students who previously had Chromebooks and hotspots checked out to them received them back Tuesday prior to dismissal. Assignments will be posted in Google Classroom.
