Green achieves the American Dream
LaTonya Green shows off the kitchen of her brand new home. She said she especially loved the granite countertops, which she had always wanted. A picture by her 4-year-old son, Enkez, hangs on the fridge. Photo by Justin Schuver.

For LaTonya Green, the path to owning her first home began with a simple drive back from college.
Green became a homeowner thanks to help from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Rural Development housing programs. The local office is located on Bob Kirk Road, which just happened to be on the way home from Green’s college classes at Augusta Tech. "I was driving back one day and just stopped at the USDA office on a whim," she said. "They were very friendly from the start and did everything they could to help me."
June is National Homeownership Month, and Green is one of the more than 1,800 homeowners who receive loan assistance each year through the USDA’s Direct Home Loan program. Her new house is located on Liberty Drive and she plans to be fully moved in by late July.

Law Enforcement Center close to hiring 2 nurses
The McDuffie County Board of Commissioners learned Tuesday that the problems concerning health care costs at the Law Enforcement Center will soon be a thing of the past.
Inmate health care costs have significantly risen over the past few years, and the problem was made worse when the jail’s doctor recently told the board he wanted out of his contract.
At a May meeting, the board approved a three-year contract with Advanced Correctional Healthcare to provide a physician for the jail, at a cost of approximately $65,400 per year.
At the time, ACH also had a $128,000 contract offer that would have included the services of a registered nurse. However, Board Chairman Charlie Newton suggested the county could find a cheaper option locally.
During Tuesday’s board meeting, Newton told commissioners that the jail is close to hiring two licensed practical nurses to fill that void. He said the nurses will combine to work seven days a week, for six hours a day, and their combined wages will be about $30,000.
