Miyah Rogers’ family and coaches as well as THS Athletic Director Larry Dunn and Benedict College head coach Loraine Dunbar applaud Rogers after she signs her scholarship.
A Thomson High School softball player signed to play softball at Benedict College on Dec. 5.
Miyah Rogers, who played left field for the Thomson Lady Dogs softball team, signed with the Benedict College Tigers, a NCAA Division II school that competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The school, which is a four-year historically black, liberal arts college, is located in Columbia, South Carolina.
Rogers said she chose Benedict because she felt it would be a great opportunity for her to better herself for the present and the future.
“We always like to celebrate the accomplishments of our student athletes,”said Thomson High School Athletic Director Larry Dunn. “The ones who do it in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Athletics is great, but academics is the thing that carries you through life forever.”
Thomson High School head coach Daniel Farrell spoke about how he has coached Rogers since she was in sixth grade at Thomson-McDuffie Middle School.
“I’m very proud of this young lady,” Farrell said. “It has been a pleasure to be around her and a pleasure to coach her. Not only academically but athletically, she has done a great job.”
Benedict College’s head coach Loraine Dunbar welcomed Rogers to the college and spoke about how the college chose to recruit her.
“We are so excited to get this young lady on our team,” Dunbar said. “We recruited her throughout the summer with her coach from the travel team, and we were amazed at what we saw on the field not only from her athletic ability but also from her personal character and her family’s character. We are excited for all of it, the whole package.”
