Kari Viola-Brooke, director of the CAC in Thomson, cuts the ribbon to officially open the organization. She is surrounded by Child Enrichment Inc. personnel, CAC personnel and other Toombs Judicial Circuit personnel.
The Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in Thomson celebrated its grand opening on Dec. 1.
“Today is a day of great joy and a lot of promise for the kids of our community,” said Bill Doupe´, Toombs Judicial Circuit district attorney.
He said the process to open the CAC through Child Enrichment Inc.’s Augusta office started in October 2002.
“There was a big push where many in the community, our office, law enforcement from all the different agencies were really anxious to get a child advocacy center opened up in the Toombs Circuit,” Doupe´ said. “I think we went ahead and applied for a certificate, had a building picked out and did a lot of fundraising, and a lot of people in this community were involved in the fundraising.”
Doupe´ said when Kari Viola-Brooke, director of the CAC, and her organization came along he knew it was the right fit to bring a center to Thomson. He added that with all the money raised in 2002 from fundraising, the CAC was able to receive a $10,774.13 check as part of matching funds for a grant.
“We’re going to be dealing with kids who have been harmed, who have some trauma to get through,” Doupe´ said.
The CAC provides forensic interviews, victim advocacy and therapy services to children and families dealing with childhood trauma such as abuse. The CAC in Thomson is located at 123 Nassau Place in the Knox Shopping Center and can be contacted by calling 706-361-0109, visiting www.childenrichment.org or by emailing Viola-Brooke at kviola@childenrichment.org. The organization is also on Facebook.
