In its first year in existence, the Columbia, Richmond, Thomson Georgia Bulldogs (CRTGB) youth football organization won championships in all four divisions it competed in for this season.
CRTGB, headlined by President Marcus Hill and Vice President Kentrell Kendrick, is part of American Youth Football& (AYF). According to the AYF website, AYF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides “support services, scholarships, grants, community programs and tournaments to member organizations who service over one million members in 50 states and several countries worldwide.”
Kendrick said he and Hill wanted to give local children the same opportunities that children all over the nation are able to receive.
“Every weekend when they play, they play on high school fields,” Kendrick said. “We want to give them that high school experience with getting their name called over the speaker and the music playing.”
Kendrick and Hill began the organization to give children in the area a new opportunity to play football and cheer.
“The recreation departments around the CSRA were doing some things that we didn’t like, so we decided to do something about it,” Kendrick said.
All four divisions -- 6U (coached by Marco Ramsey), 8U (coached by Commodore Howell), 10U (coached by Kendrick) and 12U (coached by Hill) -- recently won championships for the conference, and Kendrick said no other team in the conference scored a point against the team this season. He added that the 6U team is the first and only in McDuffie County.
The teams travel around Georgia and South Carolina to play during the season.
The program is not only for football players but also for cheerleaders. The cheer program is broken up into the same age groups as the football teams.
As the 2017 season ends, Kendrick said the time for an informational meeting is in the near future. Teams practice at the Eubank Park in Dearing, and the registration fee is $85 which covers a jersey and insurance.
Kendrick said parents have to provide the rest of the equipment.
