Thomson Fire Rescue raises money for area hospital
By Linda Green

Lt. Pam Nickles and Firefighter Randy Rossi are shown with Thomson Mayor Kenneth Usry.
Although the boot drives Thomson Fire Rescue conducts to raise money for the East Central Regional Hospital in Augusta have ended, people still have the opportunity to help the firefighters bring holiday cheer to the patients.
Thomson-McDuffie citizens may still participate in the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade and drop off cash and coins at the fire department headquarters on McCommons Street and also pick up a list items needed by the patients with developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges.
The motorcade is a statewide campaign of the Georgia Municipal Association, in cooperation with fire departments, to help the clients of Georgia’s five regional behavioral health hospitals celebrate Christmas by providing each of the 3200 patients with a present. The motorcade raises money to purchase the bare essentials needed by the patients, such as underwear, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shoes and socks, other personal items and etc. Any items not handed out at Christmas are used throughout the year to celebrate birthdays and other special days.
Thomson’s firefighters started the boot drives in September and ended Nov. 6. They are still collecting at the headquarters until the money and gifts are presented to the East Central Regional Hospital on Dec. 7.
“Each year this most meaningful program allows each patient in Georgia’s mental health and mental retardation facilities to receive a Christmas gift. We have been told by the hospitals that without the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade, many of the patients would not receive any gift at all,” Mayor Kenneth Usry said.
“This is why we do what we do. “Our purpose is to do something for these folk in giving them the bare essentials that they need everyday,” the mayor said.
