Bucs top Brentwood 21-7 for region title

Briarwood Head Coach Bo Fleming celebrates as time expires in the Buc’s region championship win at Brentwood.
Although they trailed early in the game, Briarwood Academy’s Buccaneers turned the momentum and defeated Brentwood 21-7 to claim the GISA Region 4AA title Friday, Oct. 20 in Sandersville. For the Bucs, this is a third straight title.
“It was a whole team effort. It was a great night,” said Briarwood Head Coach Bo Fleming.
Brentwood struck first by putting points on the board with a 40-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter to establish a 7-0 lead.
Much of the first half was a defensive battle and Brentwood was able to slow the Briarwood ground game. Fleming said Brentwood came into the game prepared to stop the run and contain Briarwood’s top running back, Dylan Reese.
“Brentwood’s a very well coached team and they are physical up front. Their backs ran hard and we ironed some things out at half time to make some adjustments and held them out when it mattered,” said Fleming.
Near the midpoint of the second quarter, the Bucs scored on a touchdown pass from Zach Stadler to Jesse Cushman.
“We were running an out route and they covered the out route and Jesse turned it into an out and up and Zach did a good job of scrambling around and finding him downfield,” explained Fleming.
