Lady Bucs compete for GISA state championship, place second
By Caitlin Boland

The Briarwood Academy Lady Bucs traveled to Mercer University in Macon to face Piedmont in the GISA AA state championship on Oct. 21.
“It was exciting for the players, coaches and the school,” said Lady Bucs head coach Wayne Wilson. “It was an accomplishment of a goal that we set each year that fell a little short.”
In the first game of the best-two-out-of-three series that began at 10 a.m., Briarwood was the visiting team for the first game and found the score board first. Nicole Purcell hit a single in the top of the first inning, and Madeline Jackson brought her home on a double.
The Lady Bucs scored their second run in the fourth inning. Madison Adams reached first base on a walk and moved to third on a single by Jackson. Adams then scored on a single from Sara Ingram.
The Lady Bucs held Piedmont scoreless the entire game until the bottom of the seventh inning. Piedmont’s left fielder hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at two, and the next batter in the line-up struck a one-run homerun to win the first game in walk off fashion. The final score was 3-2.
Grace Bridges went 1-for-4, Nicole Purcell went 1-for-3, Madeline Jackson went 2-for-3 with a double, Sara Ingram went 1-for-2 and both Karson Hobbs and Maci Dyson went 1-for-3.
Chloe Wilson allowed eight hits, three runs, three walks and racked up 10 strikeouts.
The second game began at 1 p.m. Since Briarwood was the visiting team in the first game, they switched dugouts to be the home team for the second game.
Briarwood’s first run came in the first inning after Adams reached first base on a walk. She advanced to second on a single by Purcell and scored on a single by Jackson.
