Tyrek Braswell escapes a Rebel for extra yards.
The Thomson Bulldogs began their region schedule with a 55-20 win Friday night over the Hephzibah Rebels at Luther Welsh Field at The Brickyard.
The overwhelming win improved the Class 4-A, No. 2-ranked Bulldogs to 5-0.
Next is a Friday the 13th trip to Milledgeville and Baldwin High School this Friday night, where the 4-2 Braves will try to end Thomson’s streak.
Friday night, the Rebels had bookend 10-point first and fourth quarters against the Bulldogs who scored 41 unanswered points at one stretch.
“We got into the groove of the game and the guys played really well,” said THS head coach Rob Ridings.
“I think it was a good thing, because we hadn’t been challenged like that since Jefferson. They moved the ball on us a little bit and controlled the clock.”
Much like the opening of the previous game against Clarkston, the Bulldogs scored quick. On the fourth play of the game, Tyrek Braswell ran in from the 3-yard line.
Thomson’s defense got tough and held Hephzibah to a 24-yard field goal Renan Arroyo.
The Dogs’ next turn ended with a 9-yard TD run by Tyler Curry.
Near the end of the first quarter, the Rebels showed they were an improved team from last year’s 10-0 season that saw Thomson shut them out 70-0. Charles Lockwood found Henri Travis open for a 7-yard scoring pass to trim THS’ lead to 14-10.
