Hometown Warrenton is gearing up for the 24th annual Sportsmans Festival on Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
|The 2017 Sportsmans Festival is set for Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Career Academy.|
“The purpose of the Sportsman's Festival is to celebrate with those sportsmen who have chosen to live in, to come to, and often, to retire to, Warren County to hunt and fish,” said Cindy Rivers, manager of Hometown Warrenton. “We offer this event as a show of our appreciation and hope that it's something fun for their entire family.”
At this year’s festival, there will be something new for the crowd as Ultimate Air Dogs will be the main event.
Ultimate Air Dogs was started in 2005 by former Detroit Tigers Pitcher Milt Wilcox and his son Brian. The organization holds competitions for canine dock diving all over the United States and accepts all breeds, all sizes and all skill levels for the dock diving contests also known as splashes.
The splashes will be 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and the finals at 2 p.m. Anyone is allowed to sign up to compete in the splashes, but there is a $10 practice fee for the event.
Also new this year is the location of the festival. The festival will be held at the Career Academy located at 115 Gibson Highway in Warrenton.
“We wanted more room for the festival and to have better visibility on the day of the event,” Rivers said.
The festival has a full schedule of events for the entire family including a car show, a big buck contest, a rifle raffle (Savage Axis 270 cal Realtree Camo with scope), a kids' carnival, a blood mobile, the M.E. Freeman Singers and an array of vendors and food.
Tickets for the rifle raffle can be purchased at Miss Jane’s, Ace Hardware or the Depot in Warrenton as well as online at warrencountyga.com.
The Warrenton American Legion Post 96 will also be hosting a VeteRUN 5k and color run as well as a turkey shoot. The turkey shoot will be at Legion Field following the festival.
“The support of the local community is invaluable and means so much to us,” said Milissa Wilkerson of the American Legion Post 96. “We are holding this run as a celebration of America's veterans and service members.”
The run, which starts at 9 a.m. will begin at the corner of S. Gibson St. and Legion Dr., and parking will be at the Career Academy. Participants are asked to use the crosswalk located on that corner to cross Legion Dr. The course will run through downtown Warrenton and into the surrounding residential neighborhood.
The Kid’s color run, which begins at noon, will be on a closed course on the road behind the Career Academy.
