The Briarwood Academy Buccaneers are off to a 4-0 start after adding another win this past Friday against Dominion Christian. The Knights fell to the Bucs, 35-7 in a game entirely controlled by Briarwood.
The Bucs established a 28-point lead just in the first quarter. Briarwood’s opening score was on an option pitch from Zach Stadler to Dylan Reese who raced 24 yards to the end zone. Matthew Acuna added the kick and the Bucs were up 7-0 after the first possession of the game.
Dominion Christian’s first possession was brief and ended on just the fourth play when Briarwood’s Jesse Cushman recovered a fumble on the Knights’ 28 yard line. Eight plays later Stadler connected to Travis Pate on a 4-yard touchdown pass and with the point after the Bucs were up 14-0 with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bucs’ defense held solid and forced the Knights to punt and Briarwood again had possession, this time starting on their 36-yard line. On just the fourth play of the series, Reese scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. Again, Acuna sailed the point-after kick straight and true.
Again, the Knights tried to put together an offense effort, which was short-lived. On second down, Cushman intercepted the deep ball and returned the pick 78 yards to score. With the point after, the Bucs took a 28-0 lead into the second quarter.
“The offense did what they were supposed to do. We were able to run the ball and throw the ball,” said Briarwood Head Coach Bo Fleming. “And then we had a defensive touchdown as well. Jesse (Cushman) made a good interception and a good return, and then we turned it over to our younger guys for the rest of the way.”
