Dearing election cancelled after no opposition to candidates
By Linda Green

The mayor and three members of the Town Council of Dearing have been automatically reelected to their positions for another four years without an election. A new member was also elected after qualifying for a seat on the board without opposition.
According to McDuffie County Elections Director Phyllis Wheeler, the election, scheduled for Nov. 7, has been cancelled because the candidates were unopposed following the Aug. 21-25 qualifying period.
Georgia law allows an election to be cancelled when there is no opposed candidate in a precinct in a special or general election, no special or general election shall be held in such precinct unless more than one write-in candidate has qualified. According to the statue, the elections superintendent shall certify unopposed candidate as elected in the same manner as he or she certifies other candidates as elected.
