The Briarwood Academy Buccaneers again traveled to Sparta for the John Hancock Academy Kick Off Classic, which is in its 19th year. Last Thursday, Aug. 10, the Bucs defeated Dawson Christian Academy 38-29.
“It showed us what we’ve got to work on up front. Our backfield’s good to go. Defensively, we’ve got a few positions to iron out,” said Briarwood Head Coach Bo Fleming. “But, the scrimmage overall was good for us and we had a lot of success, which builds confidence.”
The Bucs controlled most of the game and held a 32-0 lead over DCA at the half. Fleming stuck with his plan to play the starters for three quarters, and that plan allowed the Bucs to build a 38-0 lead before DCA rallied against the younger Briarwood players.
The Bucs open at home this Friday in a non-conference game against Westminster Schools of Augusta at 7:30 p.m. Briarwood will also be home in week two as they vie for the Backyard Battle trophy Aug. 25 against Edmund Burke Academy.
