Barbara Jean Chafin Gassaway, 77 of Augusta Hwy. entered into rest on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at her residence.
Mrs. Gassaway, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, was the daughter of the late Austin and Elmyra Patterson Chafin. A native of Wilkes County, she had been a resident of Lincoln County since she was 18 years old and had been employed at Oxford Manufacturing and FDB. Also, she was a member of New Hope Baptist Church for many years. Her husband, Patrick H. “P.H.” Gassaway, Jr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include, sons, Patrick H. Gassaway, III, Lincolnton, David Jeffery “Jeff” Gassaway, Lincolnton; sisters, Frances Reed and husband, John of Washington, Ga., Joyce Brown, of Sharon, Ga., Kaye Lokey and husband, George of Thomson, Ga.; grandchild, Kayla G. Harris and husband, Zackary; great- grandchild, Abigail Harris.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Kalliokoski officiating.

Clara Powers Gurley
Clara Powers Gurley, 73, gained her heavenly wings on August 5, 2017.
Clara was born April 10, 1944, and grew up in North Augusta, S.C., where she attended North Augusta High School and met the love of her life, Ronald Gurley. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, and they settled down in North Augusta to raise their family. Daughter, Rebecca Corley (Charles), and sons Mike Gurley (LeeAnn), Mark Gurley (Angela) and Chris Gurley (Tiffany) are cherishing memories of a very special, devoted mother. They all reside in the Harlem, Ga., area.
Her legacy continues in the lives of her grandchildren: Megan Holley, Kaley Wallace (Cullen), Justin Gurley (Callie), Hannah Tankersley (Chris), Nick Newsome (Brandy), Carson Gurley, Abbie Gurley, Gage Gurley, Addison Gurley, Logan Gurley, and Gracyn Gurley and nine great-grandchildren. The grandsons will be her pallbearers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy F. Purvis.
The family received friends on Aug. 7, 2017, at Beggs Funeral Home in Thomson, Ga., from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
A celebration of life service was held Aug. 8, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at Kiokee Baptist Church in Appling, Georgia, with her pastor, Tim Ferrell, officiating.
Elizabeth Johnson Wiley
Elizabeth Wiley Johnson, 102, went to be with her lord and savior on Aug. 1, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. Edgeworth Hawes Wiley and Mrs. Janie Darsey Wiley; her husband of 50 years, Walter Edwin Johnson; her brothers Lonnie Elbert Wiley, George Edgeworth Wiley and John Thomas Wiley; and her sister Martha Catherine Wiley. Her two sons William Wiley Johnson and Walter Edwin Johnson Jr. and their wives, Susan Ramsey Johnson and Jean Everett Johnson, survive her and cherish her memory.
She was a proud member of the First Baptist Church of Thomson, the Wrightsboro Foundation and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Visitation at Curtis Funeral Home 218 W. Hall Street was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 3.. Graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 4 in Westview Cemetery.
