Hogie Joe’s wing challenge gets hot

A Thomson restaurant was the hot place to be Saturday afternoon.
Hogie Joe’s Sports Grill hosted the First Annual Chicken Wing Challenge July 29.
While some contests might task entrants to see how many wings they could consume, this one sought to see if the combatants could handle the heat of the wings.
Amy Kiel, owner and general manager, said contestants paid $10 and qualified for a grand prize of $100 and t-shirts. Each of the participants had to sign a waiver for the dynamited chicken.
The 16 entrants raced to be the first to consume 10 of the wings, aided by only water or beer, and keep them down for 10 minutes.
The wings were coated with a molten concoction that included Ghost Chili Pepper Extract and Carolina Reaper Chili Pepper Extract and the aroma from the seasoning emanated throughout the restaurant as the baskets of heat were presented.
