Augusta Warrior Project offers help to local veterans
By Caitlin Boland

Alvin Banks serves as a veteran outreach advocate for Augusta Warrior Project. His office, located at East Central Georgia Work Source in Thomson, helps him better serve veterans in our local area.
The Augusta Warrior Project (AWP) services veterans and their families all over the CSRA.
According to Veteran Outreach Advocate Alvin Banks, the local nonprofit connects veterans, wounded or not, of all eras and their families with resources that improve their lives. The organization has four main functions -- connect, educate, collaborate and advocate.
AWP completes these four functions through helping veterans with housing, employment, benefits and healthcare, education and collaborative services.
We try to take a wholistic approach and find the initial incident that put them in that situation,” Banks said. “We want to get them back on their feet not only for the short term but also the long term. Veterans are a unique community. They are not looking for a hand out but a hand up. We will do whatever it takes to get them back on their feet.”
Banks said he wants people to know the resources that are available to them.
Banks said AWP also focuses on helping veterans and their families navigate benefits and healthcare. The organization assists veterans with applying for disability and other non-service connected pensions, survivor benefits, discharge reviews, insurance and records requests and much more.
The AWP website says they help veterans cut through the red tape to get the services they are entitled to and need.
