Tournament to celebrate Drake Widener’s legacy
By Jim Wallace

Drake Widener was a pitcher and outfielder for the Bulldogs.
An upcoming softball tourney will celebrate the life of a Thomson teenager.
The 2017 Drake Widener Softball Tournament will be Friday, July 7, beginning at 7 p.m. at Sweetwater Park.
The event will honor Widener, a 2014 graduate of Thomson High School.
At the school, Widener, 19 at the time of his accident, was a pitcher and outfielder for the Bulldogs, and he lost his life in a car accident in November 2016.
Brenton Widener, Drake’s brother, said close to a dozen teams have signed up and more still have a chance to play.
The tourney, in its second year, was shortened last year because of rain, and Widener hopes the weather is better for this year’s games.
Fans can come watch the games, which Widener predicts will continue past midnight.
“There will be a concession stand with hotdogs and drinks,” Widener said.
“We will also have wristbands and t-shirts for sale, with all the proceeds going to the scholarship fund.”
