Larry Dunn serves as the assistant principal for discipline at Thomson High School as well as the athletic director for the school. Dunn has been working at Thomson High School since 2008.
Retired Gunnery Sgt. Larry Dunn recently received an award for his efforts as the athletic director at Thomson High School.
Dunn began his career in McDuffie County as the Naval Science Instructor for the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) in 2008.
“In the military, I worked with several NJROTC programs in California, and the program seemed interesting to me,” Dunn said. “Then, I got a job at Huntingtown High School in Maryland to head up a brand new NJROTC program there.”
After gaining some experience instructing the NJROTC program in Maryland, Dunn said he saw an opportunity to come to THS.
“I’m originally from Washington-Wilkes, so when I saw that THS was approved for a program, I applied and was hired,” Dunn said.
According to the Navy’s website, the NJROTC program “emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by extra-curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic, drill and orienteering competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, marksmanship sports training, and physical fitness training.”
