The Thomson-McDuffie Middle School Bulldogs finished second in the CSRA Middle School League after losing 4-3 Thursday, March 23, to T.J. Elder Middle School Bears in Washington County.
On March 21, the Bulldogs won the right to face Elder with an 11-6 win against Louisville Middle School at Sweetwater Park.
Against Louisville, Louisville got on the board early with three runs in the first inning. Thomson had big innings in the second and third when they scored a total of eight runs before adding two more in the fifth.
Against Elder, Thomson knew the team could hit, even though the Bulldogs had won 9-3 in the regular season.
The game was tied until the final inning when the home team was able to push the winning win across the plate. Thomson took the lead in the first inning with three runs. Elder answered with 2 and added another run in the third.
A two-out walk-off hit ended the game, and head coach Brock Hawkins said mistakes and inconsistency led to a tough loss.
Thomson ends the season at 14-1, and Brandon Hudson, assistant coach, and Hawkins said the future looks bright for the team.
“We have 7th graders with a ton of experience and 6th graders that have talent,” Hawkins said.
