McDuffie Rec. Dept. girls basketball team makes history
By Caitlin Boland

Players include Sha’liyah Bacon, Jala Dawson, Da’Lysa Gilmore, Andreonna Johnson, Jada Kendrick, Jada Martin, Aubrey Neal, Janiya Scott and Jameria Yarber. Coaches shown in the photo are Cosmo Kendrick, Tina Gibbons and Lawrence Daniels. Head coach Troy Miles was unable to attend the tournament.
The McDuffie County Recreation Department nine and 10-year-old girls basketball team made history by winning second place in the Class B Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) tournament.
The girls traveled to Carrolton, Georgia, on March 3 to begin pool play for the GRPA tournament. On March 4, Thomson faced Carrolton, beating them by a score of 24-4. They then faced Ware County, beating them 38-17. In the championship game, Thomson faced Tift County and lost 31-25.
Monte Ashcraft, Thomson-McDuffie County Recreation Department athletic manager, said Thomson was leading 25 to 17 in the fourth period against Tift County when two key players fouled out with three minutes left in the game.
“This is an exceptional group of young ladies,” Ashcraft said. “We had a good turnout of parents and community members in Carrolton. The girls also had an outstanding group of coaches, and they practiced pretty much every day for two hours to get ready for state.”
