Dogs lose to Knights in Elite 8 round of state tourney

Darius Turman takes a shot for THS from beyond the 3-point line as a defender arrives late.
A weak second period against the No. 1 team in Class AAAA led to the Thomson Bulldogs losing 70-56 against the Upson-Lee Knights in the Elite 8 round of the state tournament in Thomaston, Wednesday, March 1.
Down 18-13 at the end of the first period, Thomson could only come up with four points in the second period and were on the downside 35-17.
“We just didn’t run a good offense,” said THS head coach Michael Thomas.
“We gave up 17 points, and that wasn’t really a problem – except we were not able to answer their points.”
In the fourth period, the Knights built a 65-38 lead and the Dogs were unable to mount a comeback, even though the Bulldogs made an 18-5 run at the end of the game.
Thomas said the Knights had a well-balanced team.
“They had a really good big guy and a really good point guard,” said the coach.
