Dogs take overtime win to advance to Elite 8 round of tourney
By Jim Wallace

Thomson’s Darius Turman, No. 12, bangs inside with Blessed Trinity’s Russell Dorvee.
The Thomson Bulldogs turned up the heat on Blessed Trinity last week and took a 55-48 win in the Sweet 16 Round of the Class AAAA State Tournament.
The visiting Bulldogs were able to stay with the Titans as the two squads battled back and forth. In the 4-minute overtime, Thomson slammed the door, outscoring Upson-Lee 8-1 for THS’ 16th win of the year.
On Wednesday night, Thomson faced Upson-Lee Knights in the Elite 8 round at Upson-Lee.
“From a coaching standpoint, we were confident,” said THS head coach Michael Thomas.
“We knew of their record and were respectful of who they were. To win 21 games, you are doing something right, and so we were aware of what they could do.”
The game was tight throughout, but Thomson was able to gain an apparent stronghold late in regulation.
“With close to 2 minutes left, we were up 7,” Thomas said.
“We played stellar defense and their point guard had picked up four fouls, so they were not at full strength.”
The Titans made a couple of 3-point baskets and Thomson was not able to convert some free throws and found itself tied at 47 and heading into overtime.
Against the Knights, no one would deny the David and Goliath comparison.
The Knights are 29-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA. The Region 4-AAAA No. 1 seed disposed of the 20-7 Stephens County Indians 78-70 Wednesday.
“They are undefeated and do a lot of things good,” said Thomas.
“We have seen video on them and they play hard with a great home crowd backing them.”
A Thomson win and the Bulldogs will return to the CSRA for the Final Four, which will be contested at Augusta University March 4 at 4 p.m.
“We’d love to have that opportunity to get back here local and play,” said Thomas.
