BOE looks at possibly renaming The Brickyard
By Brian Bowden

At a recent planning session and monthly meeting, the McDuffie County Board of Education discussed the possibility of a name change to The Brickyard. "I have received several emails and earfuls [about the issue]," said BOE chairman Greg Derry. "Their idea is to rename it Luther Welsh Field at The Brickyard."
The Brickyard, home to the Thomson High School Bulldogs, garnered its name in the late 1930s after the original high school burned to the ground in a freak lighting strike and brick from the debris was used in the wall that now surrounds the football field.
Luther Welsh, the legendary THS football coach, won 11 regional titles and three state championships (1984, 1985, 2002) in his two stints with the school. He had a career record of 333-187 and coached the Bulldogs a combined 19 years. He retired from football in 2010 and passed away in 2011.
