National Night Out huge success
By Amanda Newsome

On Aug. 5, the walking track at the old Dearing Elementary School was the location for meeting the county’s public safety officers.
The track brought nearly 200 people to a National Night Out. The event was held for the community of McDuffie County to be able to come out and meet their local public service people and stand against crime.
Groups such as the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department, Dearing Fire Department, National Guard, Richmond County's bomb squad, EMS and Thomson Fire and Rescue exhibited their services and engaged the community.
The spearhead of the event was Becky Craven, a Dearing resident and member of the McDuffie County 911 operations. "National Night Out is a nationwide event where the community comes together to meet the area’s public safety. Different displays are set up and it was all put on by the Sheriff's Department," she said. The two-hour event lasted included free food, bicycle races, corn toss competitions, a dunking booth, and according to Craven, "whatever the people want to do."
