Commissioners divided, select new county manager
By Linda Green

The McDuffie County Board of Commissioners tapped David Robert Crawley, Jr., of Rincon, as the manager of the county during a called July 29 meeting. He was one of three finalists for the position that becomes vacant on July 31, at the retirement of Don Norton, who was county manager for 11 years. Crawley, a biologist, is currently public works director for the City of Springfield. He was previously manager for Effingham County where he resigned in 2013 amid questions involving an audit.

In a roll call vote, commissioners Fred Favors and Sammie Wilson, Sr., selected candidate Pamela Workman, the county's current finance director as their choice for the position while commissioners William "Bill" Jopling and Paul McCorkle selected Crawley. Commission Chairman Charlie Newton split the tie with a vote for Crawley.

According to Newton, "Mr. David Crawley will be our next county manager assuming that we come to terms with him on pay. If we cannot come to terms with him, we will come back before the board for additional input."
