Thomson Packing Company closing its doors
By Brian Bowden

Thomson Packing Company, famous for selling Cason's Sausage, will be closing at the end of July after 40-plus years of business in McDuffie County.
"I would like to thank every customer who has entered our doors," said owner Warren Newsome. "I have been here well over 30 years and made a lot of friends. God has truly blessed our family with your family."
Originally started by C.D. Cason, Newsome and a colleague took over the business after his retirement. "I worked for Mr. Cason around 10 years," said Newsome. "Then Mickey Wilkerson and I bought it from him and we were together 13 years." Wilkerson unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack and Newsome was left running the business for the past 10-plus years. "When you work over 60 hours a week for 30-something years you don't ever get to know your family too much. If I wanted to work 65 or 75 hours a week I could keep it open. I'm working on 70 years old though," said Newsome, who has three children. "We have been a part of this community for over 40 years, but I think the time has come in my life to spend some time with my family."
