Board approves bids for Norris demolition
By Brian Bowden

The McDuffie County Board of Education unanimously approved two bids for asbestos abatement and demolition of the old R.L. Norris building, on Harrison Road in Thomson, at their monthly meeting on July 10.
The bids, won by the Augusta-based construction company Chaplin & Sons, totaled $243,072 and included abatement, demolition and general conditions.
"We feel very confident they are capable of keeping us on course," said Dallas Smith, construction manager at Parrish Construction Group.
Parrish Construction Group, based in Perry, held the open bidding on July 3 and had 12 total bidders with six bids per package. "These are the results of the bid that we held this past Thursday [July 3]," said Smith. "That included the abatement of the existing old R.L. Norris Elementary School and the demolition, which essentially resulted in two bid packages."
The winning bid for abatement came in at $60,000, while the next lowest bidder was Kadima, Inc. at $68,690. The winning bid for demolition came in at $85,000, while the next lowest bidder was Thompson Building Wrecking Co., Inc. at $97,000. "Actually the abatement and demolition [total winning bids] came in about $25,000 less than we had budgeted," said Smith.
