Individuals running the race against cancer in McDuffie County raised more than $140,000 for the American Cancer Society.
The team captains who organized the 2014 Relay for Life that enlisted the participation of more than 1500 people to “Run the Race-Fight Cancer” were celebrated during July 14 awards luncheon at the McDuffie Museum.
With the $142,000 raised and counting in the 2014 event, in the 16 years of Relay for Life in McDuffie County, $2.5 million has been raised to increase cancer awareness.
“Up to last year, you raised $2.3 million in the fight against cancer which is amazing,” said Linda Davidson, the senior director of Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. “There is nothing better than a community that takes up the fight, which is the core of Relay,” she said.
Relay Co-Chairperson Bob Knox told the team captains that the McDuffie team has a great record and great history in the annual Relay event for the cancer society.
“Before the downturn hit, we were the best in the country in our size,” he said. Acknowledging the numerous plaques McDuffie Relay has received, Knox said the goal is more. “It is about seeing the 2000-2500 people coming and going on the night of Relay. That is great,” he said
