Votes to be recounted in Board of Education District 3 election
By Linda Green

A candidate who sought election to the District 3 seat on the McDuffie County Board of Education has asked for a recount of the votes in the May 20 election.
James Taylor, who was one of three seeking the position, requested a recount on Tuesday.
In the general election, Jarvis J. McNair received 187 votes or 42.02 percent of the 444 votes cast in the district, Richard Downs received 130 or 29.21 percent and James Taylor received 127 or 28.54 percent.
Downs and McNair are scheduled to face each other again in a runoff election on July 22 since none of the candidates received 50 plus one percent of the votes. According to Kelvin Williams, director of McDuffie County Elections, Georgia law allows a losing candidate to request a recount of the votes if the difference between his/her vote and that of a candidate declared eligible for a runoff is not more than one percent, and if such request is received in writing by the election superintendent within two business days following certification of election results.
