• Shurling and Farr named Senior Citizen of the Year
By Linda Green

A man and woman have been named 2014 Senior Citizen of the Year in McDuffie County.
Joyce R. Shurling, 77, and James Robert “Bob” Farr, 90, were named and honored with a proclamation at the May 7 meeting of the McDuffie County Board of Commissions.
The two were awarded top senior citizen because of their unselfish desire to serve others and for their dedication, loyalty and service to the people of McDuffie and nearby areas.
Since 1990, McDuffie County has recognized a resident who is 70+ years of age, has performed (or is performing) worthwhile deeds and has made (or is making) a positive difference in McDuffie County.
Due to the numerous nominations received by Thomson-McDuffie Senior Center’s selection committee, the members decided to name a man and a woman as the county’s top senior citizens. This is the first time in the history of the designation that two people have been named simultaneously.
