A company with a large footprint in McDuffie County has been recognized as the Large Business of the Year.
Shaw Industries, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc., is one of the world's largest carpet manufacturers. It makes residential and commercial, broadloom woven and hand tufted carpets, carpet tiles, area rugs and hardwood and vinyl floors.
With 500 employees in the Thomson facility, at 1990 Warrenton Highway, the flooring giant was given the Large Business of the Year distinction at the recent membership banquet of the Thomson-McDuffie Chamber of Commerce
"If it is flooring, we make it," said John Riley, the plant manager for the last two years.
Riley said he had an idea that Shaw would be the recipient of the Large Business of the Year award when the banquet presenter spoke of the number of new jobs the business added to the economy, the number it seeks to add in the year as well as the number of employees already working.
"That sounded like us," said Riley, who has been a Shaw Industries employee for 32 years.
