“Finish the Fight,” this year’s national slogan for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, was mentioned often duirng Tuesday night’s kickoff of the 2014 Relay for Life of McDuffie County.
The event, at Augusta Technical College’s Thomson campus, celebrated last year’s Relay accomplishments and gave a glimpse into this year’s efforts.
This year’s event will be Friday, May 8, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Thomson High School track. The Relay co-chairs are Bob Knox and Pam Edmondson.
Sara Ruffin, Relay specialist for McDuffie County, said this year’s Relay goal is $141,000. It is hoped that 50 teams with 1,250 registered walkers will participate. Another goal is to register 650 survivors.
Ruffin said that last year’s Relay involved 44 teams, 640 registered survivors and 1,238 participants raised $139,128.
Knox highlighted how the county’s 15 Relays have raised a little over $2.36 million.
“Relays fund much of what the ACS does and they are important,” said Knox. “It also creates community interest and community participation.”
Knox stressed that it is amazing that with 1,500 people participating, word travels.
