The wind lifting flames from controlled burns Monday had county firefighters responding to five brush fires before 3 p.m.
Firefighters from McDuffie County Fire Rescue began their Monday with an 11:05 alarm to 6153 Lincolnton Highway.
According to Capt. Ron May, the fire got away from the property owner, who was burning limbs and stumps.
“The fire got out of hand and burned one-half acre,” May said.
As soon as that fire was brought under control, 12 firefighters responded to a 12:25 p.m. brush fire call at 1200 Stagecoach Road.
Julie Gerlach was burning limbs when the wind spread the fire through the field adjacent to her home. She said when the fire first began to get away, she attempted to extinguish it with a garden hose but the hose, was frozen because of cold temperatures.
