• Essay contest invites sixth graders to be mayor
By Linda Green

If you were the mayor of Thomson or Dearing, what would you do?
McDuffie County sixth graders have the opportunity to answer that question in a statewide contest for cities and towns in the Georgia Municipal Association.
The City of Thomson is accepting 350-word essays from sixth graders responding to “If I Were Mayor, I Would . . .” through March 1.
Thomson City Clerk Dianne Landers, introduced the contest during a Monday afternoon presentation to the Kiwanis Club of Thomson.
She said the contest allows students the opportunity to creatively use social studies lessons to tell what they would do as mayor to make their city the best place to live.
Landers said the Georgia Municipal Association would like to know how students would plan for their city’s future and how they would lead. Writing the essays will allow students to learn the role of city government in their lives, she added.
