Fifth grade students at Dearing Elementary, in cooperation with the Georgia Sheriff's Association, successfully completed the CHAMPS program and received certificates at the ceremony on Dec. 19 in the school's lunch room.
CHAMPS, which stands for choosing healthy activities and methods promoting safety, teaches children about topics such as alcohol, ATV safety, bullying, drugs, peer pressure, tobacco, gangs, stress and much more. The program ran for 20 weeks during the school year, where students would learn about new topics each week.
The program was taught by Deputy Barry Whitfield of the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department with the help of faculty members at Dearing Elementary.
