A man with 14 years of dedicated service as a volunteer firefighter for the Town of Dearing has been named its 2013 Firefighter of the Year.
His colleagues selected Lt. Jason Powell as the top firefighter from the department of 16 people.
The fire chief called Powell’s name during the annual firefighter’s appreciation service on Dec. 7.
“I was totally surprised to hear my name called,” Powell said. “I never expected to receive this award.”
“Jason is a hard worker for our department and his colleagues voted him as Firefighter of the Year,” said Fire Chief Danny Cason. “If you ask him to do something, he gets its done. Since he is a volunteer, when he is around, he is there.”
